Samuel Naumbourg

Born in Dennelohe, Germany, he received his musical education in Munich and sang in Maier Kohn’s synagogue choir. After serving as choir master in Strassburg he went to Paris in 1843. During the years 1845-1880 he was Chazzan at the synagogue in Rue Notre Dame de Nazareth. Influenced by French and Italian opera, he composed liturgical music and arranged traditional Jewish melodies.

His major work "Zemiroth Israel" was published between 1847-1864.
It contained original and traditional pieces, some influenced by Halevy and Meyerbeer, for Chazzan and choir, and some to be accompanied by the organ. His work was known not only in France but also among the Jews of North Africa.
He died in Saint Mande near Paris, France.
